Sciatica physiotherapy in Kitchener
Stride Physiotherapy assesses and treats sciatica at our Kitchener clinic at 214 Weber St E. No referral is needed to book, and direct billing is available for most major extended health plans.
How we assess sciatica
Most people who book this assessment describe pain that travels down one leg, sometimes with tingling or numbness along the way. The assessment is about finding out why.
Maya starts by mapping your symptoms: where they start and how far down the leg they travel, plus which positions or times of day change them. That map matters, because leg pain that comes from the back is assessed differently than leg pain that comes from the nerve itself.
Then come the in-clinic checks. She watches how your back and hips move, and runs simple nerve tests, including strength and reflex checks in the affected leg. None of it requires imaging, and each test is explained before it happens.
If anything in the assessment points to a problem that needs a doctor's opinion, she says so at the table and sends a note your doctor can act on. Otherwise, you leave with a written plan and a plain-language explanation of what she found.
What a first visit for sciatica looks like
Symptom mapping
A full hour with Maya. Before you come in, jot down which positions change your leg symptoms. Those notes make the first twenty minutes count.
Nerve and movement checks
Simple in-clinic tests of the affected leg, alongside a look at how your back and hips move. Every test is explained before it happens.
Plan and first treatment
A written plan you understand, with costs laid out first. When it is appropriate, treatment starts the same visit.
What can sciatica treatment involve?
What your treatment involves depends on what your assessment finds. Sciatica plans are built around the nerve, so they rarely look like a standard back plan. Treatment can include:
- Education about positions and pacing through your day
- Graded movement that respects what the nerve is telling us
- Hands-on treatment in the clinic where appropriate
- Nerve mobility exercises to do at home
- Scheduled review points where the nerve checks are repeated and the plan is adjusted

Sciatica questions, answered plainly
Is sciatica the same thing as back pain?
Not quite. Sciatica describes symptoms that travel along the path of the sciatic nerve, usually down the back of one leg. Some people have back pain with it and some do not. Part of your assessment is sorting out which one you are dealing with, because the two are treated differently.
Do I need an MRI before booking for sciatica?
No. A physiotherapy assessment for sciatica does not require imaging. Maya assesses your symptoms and runs simple in-clinic nerve checks first. If the assessment turns up anything that needs a doctor's opinion or imaging, she will tell you directly and send a note your doctor can act on.
Is physiotherapy the right place to start for sciatica?
Often, yes. Physiotherapists are primary care practitioners in Ontario, so you can book directly and be assessed without seeing a doctor first. If your assessment shows physiotherapy is not the right fit for your symptoms, we say so and point you to who can help. That is our Right-Fit Promise.
