How we assess you after surgery

Post-surgical rehab starts with your surgeon's paperwork, not with guesswork. Many of our patients arrive after knee or shoulder procedures done here in Waterloo Region.

Maya reads your protocol and your discharge notes before she measures anything. The protocol tells us which phases your surgeon wants and which precautions apply, plus the milestones that gate each phase. Your plan is mapped to it, not improvised around it.

Then she takes your baseline: careful measurements of range and strength around the surgical site, recorded so every later visit has something honest to compare against. The restrictions your surgeon set are written into the plan where you can see them.

After each block of visits, we send your surgical team a short note on the measurements. Surgeons keep referring to us because the notes are ones they can actually use.

What a first visit after surgery looks like

Bring the paperwork

Bring your surgical protocol and your discharge notes. If you have imaging reports, bring those too. Maya reads them with you before anything else happens.

Baseline measurements

A full hour, one on one. She measures range and strength around the surgical site and records the numbers your progress will be tracked against.

A phased plan

You leave with a written plan mapped to your surgeon's phases and a visit schedule that matches it, with costs laid out before anything starts.

What can post-surgical treatment involve?

Your surgeon's protocol decides what each phase involves, and your measurements decide when you move between phases. Within that structure, treatment can include:

  • Guided range-of-motion work, kept inside the protocol's limits
  • Progressive strengthening matched to the current phase
  • Hands-on treatment in the clinic where the protocol allows it
  • Measurements repeated and recorded at each visit
  • Written progress notes back to your surgical team

Getting to the clinic

We are at 214 Weber St E, about a ten minute drive from Grand River Hospital and a few minutes east of downtown Kitchener. Parking is behind the building, close to the door.

If a car collision led to your surgery, we look after the MVA paperwork as well; ask when you book. For backs that hurt without an operation in the picture, start with our back pain page, and for leg symptoms that travel from the back, see sciatica. The full list is under conditions we treat in Kitchener.

Common questions

Post-surgical rehab questions, answered plainly

When should I book physiotherapy after surgery?

Your surgeon's protocol sets the timing, and many protocols name a specific window for starting rehab. Bring the protocol when you book, or call us with the date of your surgery and we will schedule to it. Some patients book before their surgery so the first rehab visit is already held.

What if I do not have a written protocol from my surgeon?

We contact your surgical team and ask for one. If a written protocol is not available, Maya works from published protocols for your procedure and confirms the plan with your surgeon's office before progressing between phases. You will always know which phase you are in and why.

Is post-surgical physiotherapy covered by insurance?

Physiotherapy is often covered in part or in full under extended health benefits, and we bill most major insurers directly. If your surgery relates to a motor vehicle accident or a workplace injury, the visits are billed through that claim instead, and we handle the paperwork with you.
