How we assess back pain

Back pain is the most common reason people walk through our door on Weber Street, and no two backs get the same assessment.

Maya starts with your story: when the pain began and what makes it better or worse, plus what a normal week asks of your back. Kitchener sits at one end of the tech corridor, so a large share of the backs we see belong to people who spend long days at a desk. If that is you, she will ask about your setup in detail.

Then she watches you move. How you bend and how you sit, and the way your hips and spine share the work between them. She also screens for the small set of signs that mean a doctor should look first. If any of those show up, she says so plainly and writes a note your doctor can use.

You leave the assessment with a plain-language explanation of what she found and a written plan, with costs laid out before anything starts.

What a first visit for back pain looks like

A full hour with Maya

You book with Maya and you see Maya. She takes your history, including your work setup and your activity through a normal Kitchener week.

Movement assessment

She watches how your back moves through bending and reaching, and screens for anything that needs a doctor to look first.

Plan and first treatment

You agree on a written plan together, and when it is appropriate, treatment starts the same visit. You leave knowing the next step.

What can back pain treatment involve?

What your treatment involves depends on what your assessment finds. There is no standard back pain package at Stride. A plan for back pain can include:

  • Hands-on manual therapy in the clinic
  • A graded exercise plan you can keep up with at home
  • A review of your desk setup and how you pace your day
  • Plain-language education about what is going on
  • Regular review points where the plan is adjusted based on how things are progressing

Getting to the clinic

We are at 214 Weber St E, a few minutes east of downtown Kitchener and a short drive from the Kitchener Market. Parking is behind the building.

Leg pain travelling below the knee often gets assessed differently, so if that sounds like you, start with our sciatica page. If your back pain follows an operation, see post-surgical rehab. Everything else we treat is listed under conditions we treat in Kitchener.

Common questions

Back pain questions, answered plainly

Do I need an X-ray or MRI before physiotherapy for back pain?

No. A physiotherapy assessment does not require imaging. Maya assesses your history and your movement first, and if anything in the assessment suggests imaging or a doctor's opinion is needed, she will say so and put it in writing for your doctor.

What should I wear to a back pain assessment?

Wear comfortable clothing that lets your physiotherapist see how your back moves. Loose layers work well, since you may be asked to bend and reach. Bring your health card and your insurance details, and any recent imaging reports if you have them.

How soon can I get an assessment for back pain?

Most weeks we can offer an assessment within a few days, and evening spots fill first. Call (519) 555-0147 or send a booking request through the website and we will call you back with the next available times.
