The session
What a sports massage session involves
The intake conversation carries more weight in a sports session than in any other kind. Your RMT wants to know what you train for and how often. What the next few weeks look like matters too. A session two days before a race is planned differently from one booked the week after, and both are different again from steady maintenance work in the middle of a training block.
The work itself is focused rather than full body. Runners usually want the legs and hips worked. Golfers and paddlers tend to point at the shoulders and mid back. Your therapist checks pressure as they go, and the plan can change on the table if something else turns out to need the time more.
Who books it
Who books sports massage in Burlington
We see a lot of runners logging kilometers on the Waterfront Trail, especially through spring race season. Rec league players book after their weekly games, and gym regulars come in partway through a program when the volume climbs. In summer the golfers show up, and in winter it is the hockey parents who finally book something for themselves.
You do not need to be competing at anything. If your activity loads your body, the session can be planned around it. When the goal is firm general work rather than training-specific focus, our deep tissue sessions may be the better fit, and expecting athletes can read about prenatal massage instead. Not sure which way to go? Our post on choosing between deep tissue and relaxation work explains how we help you pick.
On the table
What to expect on the table
Wear or bring whatever you are comfortable in. Some clients like athletic shorts so the legs can be worked while staying partly dressed, and the standard draping applies either way: a sheet and blanket keep you covered the whole time and only the area being worked on is uncovered. Your therapist leaves the room while you get on and off the table and checks pressure as they go. Nothing happens without your consent. Sports massage can involve movement, like a guided stretch of the hip or shoulder, and each of those is explained before it happens.
