What ChatGPT Actually Reads Before It Names a Local Business
Most advice about showing up in AI answers is guesswork. Here is what side-by-side testing found ChatGPT actually reads for local queries, and the free check that shows where you stand.
Part of AI Search Visibility (AEO)
The short answer
For local questions, testing published in 2026 found ChatGPT runs a Bing search, takes roughly the top twenty to thirty ordinary web results and reorganizes them with its own logic. It does not appear to read the profile data you manage inside Bing Places. So the practical lever is being visible and quotable in Bing's ordinary results, which you can check for free in about ten minutes.
There is a lot of advice about getting into AI answers, and most of it is written with more confidence than the evidence supports.
The most repeated claim is that ChatGPT reads business listings, so claiming your Bing Places profile is the way in. It sounds right. Bing is Microsoft, ChatGPT search leans on Microsoft, so a Bing listing must feed it. Plenty of agencies sell that logic.
Somebody actually tested it, and it does not hold up.
What the testing found
Search Engine Land ran side by side comparisons between ChatGPT's local answers and Bing's own results. Two findings matter for you.
First, ChatGPT does not appear to read the profile data businesses manage inside Bing Places. It could not see the extras those listings carry, like reviews pulled in from Facebook and Yelp, or the map of listed businesses. The listing you carefully fill out is not being read as a listing.
Second, ChatGPT is not simply repeating Bing either. For a dry cleaners query in Brooklyn, its top three came back in a different order to Bing's own ranking. What it appears to do is run a search, gather roughly the top twenty to thirty ordinary web results, then reorganize them using its own logic about which businesses to name and why.
So the mental model to hold is this. An assistant answering "best physio in Brantford" is not consulting a database of physios. It is reading two or three dozen ordinary web pages about physios in Brantford and deciding which ones it has enough confidence to name.
Everything useful follows from that.
A caveat I want to be plain about, because this field is full of people who are not. This reflects testing published up to August 2026. The engines change their plumbing without announcing it, results vary between runs of the same question, and anybody claiming certain knowledge of how a specific answer got built is guessing. Treat the mechanism as the current best evidence rather than a permanent law.
What it means in practice
Your pages are competing, not your listings. If the assistant is reading web results, then what it finds has to be worth reading. A single homepage with a phone number gives it nothing to work with. A page for each service and each town gives it something specific to match against a specific question.
Pages other people wrote count as much as yours. Those twenty to thirty results are not all yours. They include directories, review platforms, local news, chamber listings and roundup articles. A business that appears across several of those looks corroborated. A business that appears only on its own website looks like a single unverified source, and an assistant hedges on those.
Being quotable beats being persuasive. Marketing copy cannot be lifted into an answer, because it does not answer anything. A sentence like "appointments typically run $95 and most patients need six to eight visits" can be. Write pages that contain retrievable facts.
Bing matters more than you thought, and you have probably never looked at it. Most Ontario owners have never once checked how they rank on Bing. If the assistant is assembling from Bing's top results, that is now a diagnostic worth running.
The free check, in about ten minutes
Do this today. It costs nothing and it tells you more than most paid audits.
Open Bing, not Google, and search the way a customer would. "Physiotherapist Brantford." "Emergency plumber Brantford." Whatever your version is.
Now look at the first thirty results, not the first five. Write down whether you appear at all, and where. Note which directories and review sites rank, because those are the pages an assistant is likely reading about your category.
Then open ChatGPT and ask the same thing in plain language. Run it three or four times, in fresh chats. The answers will vary between runs, which is normal and is the reason a single check tells you almost nothing. Write down who gets named each time.
Put the two lists side by side. The businesses named by the assistant are usually the ones that appear repeatedly across those Bing results, on their own site and on somebody else's. If you are absent from the second list, look at the first one and you will usually see why.
That comparison is the whole audit. Everything an agency would charge you for starts there.
What to fix, in order
If the check shows you are thin, this is the sequence that pays.
Make sure you are indexed and findable on Bing at all. Bing Webmaster Tools is free, and you can submit your sitemap the same way you would with Google. Plenty of small business sites have simply never been submitted, and a site that is not indexed cannot rank anywhere.
Give the assistant more surface. A page per service and a page per town, each plainly naming the work and the place. Thin sites lose here for a simple reason: there is nothing to read.
Get onto the third-party pages that already rank for your category. You saw them in the check. Directory listings, review platforms, local business associations. Consistent details on each one, matching your site exactly.
Put quotable facts on your own pages. Prices or ranges, response times, service areas, what you do and do not take on. This is the part almost nobody does, which is why it works.
Keep reviews coming. They feed the review platform pages that show up in those results, and steady recent reviews read as a stronger signal than a pile of old ones.
None of this is separate from ordinary local marketing. That is the honest conclusion, and it is good news. You are not being asked to learn a new discipline. You are being asked to do the existing one thoroughly, and to write like somebody might quote you.
Common questions
Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing for local searches?
Testing published through 2026 indicates ChatGPT's web search draws on Bing's index rather than Google's, reflecting OpenAI's search partnership with Microsoft. But it reorganizes those results with its own logic rather than repeating Bing's order, so ranking well on Bing helps without guaranteeing anything.
If I claim my Bing Places listing, will ChatGPT find me?
Not directly, according to the side-by-side testing. ChatGPT did not appear to read the profile data managed inside Bing Places. Claim it anyway because it is free and it keeps your details consistent across the web, but do not expect it to be the thing that gets you named.
How many web results does ChatGPT look at for a local question?
The testing suggests roughly the top twenty to thirty organic results for the query, which it then filters and reorders. That is why appearing once on page one of Bing is less useful than appearing several times across the first three pages, on your own site and on other people's.
Why do I get a different answer every time I ask?
Because these systems are probabilistic and the answer is assembled fresh each time. This is expected. It is also why measuring your AI visibility properly means asking the same question several times and recording how often you appear, rather than treating one answer as the truth.
Do I need different content for AI search than for Google?
Mostly no, with one real difference. The foundations are shared. What changes is shape: put a direct, quotable answer near the top of the page instead of building up to it, and make sure the specifics a customer would ask about are actually stated somewhere rather than implied.
