AEO vs SEO: What Actually Changes for a Local Business
Answer engine optimization is being sold as a whole new discipline. Most of it is not. Here is what genuinely changes, what stays the same, and what is worth paying for.
Part of AI Search Visibility (AEO)
The short answer
About eighty percent of answer engine optimization is ordinary local SEO done thoroughly, so if your foundations are weak there is no separate AEO project worth buying. What genuinely changes is content shape, source corroboration and how you measure, because you are now aiming to be quoted rather than clicked.
Answer engine optimization arrived as a term about eighteen months ago and immediately got sold as a new discipline you are behind on. Agencies added an AEO line to the menu. Some of them added a price to match.
Most of it is not new. Some of it genuinely is. Knowing which is which stops you paying twice for the same work.
What does not change
The foundations are shared, and this is the part the marketing tends to skip past.
Your Google Business Profile still matters, and if anything it matters more, because it feeds the map results and the pages that describe you elsewhere. Consistent details across the web still matter, for the same reason they always did: a machine trying to identify you needs your records to agree. Reviews still matter. A fast site that works on a phone still matters. Being indexed at all still matters.
If those are not solid, there is no separate AEO project worth buying. You would be paying for advanced work on a broken foundation, which is the oldest way to waste money in this industry.
I would put it at roughly eighty percent overlap. Anybody selling you AEO as a wholly separate service, at a separate price, on top of an SEO retainer covering the same ground, should be asked to show you which twenty percent is different.
What genuinely changes
You are aiming to be quoted, not clicked.
This is the real shift. Traditional search sent people to your page. An answer engine reads your page, extracts what it needs and often answers without sending anybody anywhere. Your reward for being a good source is being named inside the answer.
That changes how you write. A page built to rank leads with a hook and builds up to the useful part, because it wants time on page. A page built to be quoted puts the answer first, in a sentence that stands alone without the paragraph around it.
Practically: if someone asks what an emergency call-out costs at 2am, the sentence "our after-hours call-out fee is $180 and covers the first hour" can be lifted. "We offer competitive, transparent pricing" cannot, because it says nothing.
Corroboration counts more than authority.
Traditional SEO taught owners to think about domain authority and backlinks. Answer engines behave differently. They lean toward businesses that several independent sources agree on. A directory listing, a review platform page, a chamber of commerce entry and a local news mention that all say the same thing about you produce confidence. One very good website saying it alone does not.
So the work shifts a little, away from chasing links for their own sake and toward making sure the handful of places that describe your business all describe it identically. That is ordinary citation hygiene, and it now pays for a second reason.
Structure stops being optional.
Schema markup has been a nice-to-have for years. Most local sites do not have it and rank fine. For answer engines it does more work, because it removes guesswork. Marking up your business details, your services and your questions section tells a machine plainly what it would otherwise have to infer.
The one that pays best for a local business is a questions section with proper FAQ markup, because it hands over question and answer pairs already in the shape an answer engine wants.
Measurement changes completely, and this is the hard part.
There is no Search Console for AI answers. No impressions report, no ranking position, no click data. You cannot log in anywhere and see how often ChatGPT named you last month.
What you can do is ask, repeatedly, and count. Take the ten questions a customer would actually ask, run each one several times across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and record how often your business appears. That gives you a mention rate. Run it again next quarter and you have a trend.
It is cruder than a ranking report and it is the honest state of the art. Be wary of any dashboard promising precise AI ranking positions, because the underlying answers vary between runs of the identical question. Anyone reporting a clean number is smoothing over variance you should be able to see.
What this means for your money
If you are currently spending nothing on search, do not start with AEO. Start with the foundations, because they serve both and they are cheaper.
If you already have a solid foundation, the genuinely additive work is short. Rewrite your main pages to answer first. Add a real questions section with proper markup. Get your details consistent on the third-party pages that already rank for your category. Publish the specifics you have been vague about, particularly prices or ranges. Then measure a baseline so you can tell whether any of it worked.
That is a project of weeks, not a permanent premium retainer line.
The businesses that will do well here are not the ones who bought the newest service. They are the ones who were already doing the unglamorous work and who write plainly enough to be quoted.
Common questions
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. It sits on top of it. The foundations that make you findable in search are the same ones that make you citable in an answer, which is why a business with weak local SEO cannot skip ahead to AEO.
Should I pay extra for AEO as a separate service?
Only if your local SEO foundations are already solid and the provider can name specifically what is different from what you already pay for. If the AEO deliverables are a Google profile audit and citation cleanup, that is standard local SEO with a new label.
How do I measure whether AEO is working?
Ask the questions your customers would ask, several times each, across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and record how often you get named. That percentage is your mention rate. Repeat quarterly. There is no official reporting tool, so a documented, repeatable manual method is the credible option.
Does schema markup actually matter for AI search?
It helps by removing ambiguity, particularly for your business details and a questions section. It is not magic and it will not lift a thin site. Treat it as making an already-good page easier to read rather than a ranking lever.
What is the single highest-return AEO change for a local business?
Publishing the specifics you have been vague about. Prices or ranges, response times, service areas, what you take on and what you refer out. Most competitors will not do it, and it gives an answer engine something concrete to quote.
